Cornflakes – A substitute of Food

Reasons to celebrate! There has been a price war among the cereal manufacturers like Kellogg, General Mills and Post and Nabisco cereals. But is it really a reason to enjoy for the consumer?

In some of our previous articles, we have mentoined that Indians are trying to ape the West, but is it justified at the cost of your health? Do you think that people are diverting more towards ready to cooked food? Or is it mere presentation of one’s standard of living? Still unanswerable!

Is recession good for cornflakes manufacturers, as they claim that cereal is an especially strong category, as consumers seek to maximize the value received from every dollar spent?

Have you ever tried to probe into the real target segment for cornflakes? Is it only limited to working young adults, school going children or is it tightening its grip to every class and every age group?

Studies suggest that most commercial cereals like cornflakes with the exception of Fibre One, Ultrafibre,Bran Flakes and a few others, contain a gram or two of fiber, and they are usually high-glycemic (meaning they raise blood sugar quickly). Not only this, they even contribute to weight gain, cravings and ultimatley lower energy.

If one is planning for suicidal, we think it’s really a good option, but the drawback is that it kills slowly. Alas! The consumption of high-glycemic foods is not only bad for your waistline, but even worst for your heart. They even hamper the functioning of one’s blood vessels and raise the risk of developing cardiovascular disease. And best part is that it put undue stress on one’s artries.

We would suggest you to give a second thought whenever you are consuming cornflakes at the cost of your health and when one knows that Breakfast has to be the King.

  1. Well, had no knowledge of these issues! I, just like any other person thought cornflakes are good for health.
Kellogs became famous during industrialization in the West when people had more work and less time. This fact made the company develop product that could be taken in a hurry.
In India, the same trend follows with an addition that we follow the West. Children are given cornflakes as they find it better in tastes and mothers think that the kids are also having milk, which otherwise they hate. This with the wring motion of a healthy diet has incresed the consumption of cornflakes.
Talking about recession, India has not been much affected and even if we have, then people would go for normal diet of chapati and vegetable in the norht and dosa in the south which is much cheaper than the Kellogs' Corn Flakes.
But one point that also needs to be looked at is the nutrient content in milk. Can it be said that the nutrients that lack in Kellogs' Cornflakes are supplemented by the milk!!

  2. It is always recommended by the health experts that your breakfast should be king and milk should be supplemented with chappati, egg, banana etc. according to one's preference. So is it really justified to consume cornflakes when we can well analyze its harmful effects, and when according to a research, it has been found that people consume kellogs along with milk assuming that now they can have their next meal in night, as it has well sufficient nutrients and calories to support them till evening? And I am not really trying to be unethnocentrism but the point is: is it justified at the cost of your health?

  3. Obviously no. Nothing can and nothing should substitute the health. I too didn't mean having cornflakes at the cost of one's health. It was just that I gave few thoughts how cornflakes became popular and what mothers might think as not everyone is aware about its harmful effects.
Its illogical having such thing and we at our level must try to convey it to common man about the harms of cornflakes.
